Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate)
Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is a progestin (a form of progesterone), a female hormone that helps regulate ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and menstrual periods.Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is used to treat conditions such as absent or irregular menstrual periods, or abnormal uterine bleeding. Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is also used to decrease the risk of endometrial hyperplasia (a condition that may lead to uterine cancer) while taking estrogens.Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is also used to prevent overgrowth in the lining of the uterus in postmenopausal women who are receiving estrogen hormone replacement therapy.Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Provera Indication
Provera 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg tablets is indicated for:
- diagnosis of primary and secondary amenorrhoea
- treatment of dysfunctional (anovulatory) uterine bleeding
- opposition of endometrial effects of oestrogen in menopausal women being treated with
- oestrogen (hormone replacement therapy [HRT])
- treatment of endometriosis.
Provera 100 mg and 200 mg tablets is indicated as adjunctive and/or palliative
treatment of recurrent and/or metastatic endometrial or renal carcinoma and, in the treatment
of hormonally-dependent, recurrent breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
Provera Presentation
Provera tablets contain medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) as the active ingredient.
Provera 2.5 mg tablets are orange, circular, scored one side, marked U64 on the other.
Provera 5 mg tablets are blue, circular, scored one side and marked 286 on both sides of the
score line, marked U on the other.
Provera 10 mg tablets are white, circular, scored marked UPJOHN 50.
Provera 100 mg tablets are white, scored, marked U467.
Provera 200 mg tablets are white, scored, marked U320.
Provera Uses
MPA is a progestational agent. When administered in recommended doses to women with adequate endogenous oestrogen, it transforms proliferative into secretory endometrium.
MPA may inhibit gonadotrophin production, which in turn prevents follicular maturation and ovulation. Similar to progesterone, MPA is thermogenic. At the very high dosage levels used in the
treatment of certain cancers (500 mg daily or more), corticoid-like activity may be manifest.
Provera Side Effect
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, fast heart rate;pain or swelling in one or both legs;chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;vaginal bleeding if you have already gone through menopause;feeling like you might pass out;a breast lump;symptoms of depression (sleep problems, dizziness, mood changes, headache);fever;jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); orswelling in your hands, ankles, or feet.
What other drugs will affect Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate)?
There may be other drugs that can interact with Generic Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate). Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.
